I requested some public records from the state of North Carolina back in November, and I still have not received them. Do you know why? I think they forgot about me.
I came to that realization today after I e-mailed the deputy communications director to get an update about my request and he responded with this line: “Thanks for getting this back on my radar.” Um, whoops.
All this time I thought some poor state worker was toiling away on my request. Wrong! I should have done a better job keeping tabs on everything. In the end, it’s the state’s job to collect and send the records to me, but I could have nudged them along.
So, take a lesson from me. Just because you file a public records request, don’t assume that your job is over. Stay on top of it and stay on their radar!
