What’s in a school chicken nugget? Reporter files FOIA to find out

I love this story idea. Monica Eng, a reporter at WBEZ 91.5, wanted to know what ingredients are in Chicago Public Schools’ cafeteria food, so she filed an Illinois Freedom of Information Act request to find out.

The school system provided Monica with a list of foods and their “ingredients,” including this:

  • Entree item: Chicken nuggets
  • Ingredient list: Chicken nuggets

Seriously. Monica reached out to the state Attorney General’s office for help and was able to get the full list of ingredients in the school system’s most popular foods, including chicken nuggets. So, how many ingredients are in those chicken nuggets? At least 28, Monica found.

You can read more on WBEZ’s website and on NPR.
